From Service to Scholar: October 2024

October 4th-6th, 2024

We are happy to share that Casey’s “From Service to Scholar” program continued it’s tradition of hosting an annual orientation weekend with the incoming undergraduate veteran students at Dartmouth College. The program is designed to create time and space for reflection, whereby students can build, understand, and share the story of how they went from military service to their scholarly pursuits. The thesis of our program is that by understanding and sharing the meaningful moments of growth and adversity within our stories we are able to identify our personal values, we connect in a more socially meaningful way, and we begin to build community when we choose to share our stories and the lessons we’ve learned with others. Following a weekend of hiking, reflection, centering, and sharing we host a community dinner where all the faculty, employees, and community members that support our veteran students can gather together, share a meal, and welcome the newest members of the group. This year, as seems to be the case every year, we were blown away by the character of the individuals we worked with and their willingness to share openly and honestly throughout the process. We look forward to continuing our work with the veteran’s throughout this school year and returning next year to meet the newest batch of veteran students.
